Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) program is a new program. It is a multi-disciplinary program open to both UAE Nationals and non-Nationals who have a good bachelors degree in a relevant subject, have strong English language abilities and who can demonstrate an interest and commitment to public health. Of the many talented individuals working in public health related jobs in the UAE in health and social care organizations such as health authorities, local government departments, hospitals and clinics only a minority have formal training and qualifications in public health. This may prevent them from progressing to become the Nations future public health leaders. This new program will provide them with the knowledge and skills to develop and advance in their chosen field and to receive the award of MPH, the internationally recognized qualification in public health. It is anticipated that some MPH graduates, if eligible, will progress to sit for examinations for membership of European or North American faculties and colleges of public health. Equipped with the skills for a career in clinical or epidemiological research some may wish to enroll for PhD programs.

Although there will be a particular emphasis on the health and health needs of the UAE and its neighbouring region, UAEU MPH graduates will have the competencies to practice public health in any community or population throughout the world. Because it is anticipated that many applicants will already be working in public health posts the course will be modular to allow flexible study. Study can be completed within 2-5 years. The course is predominantly a taught course but the latest teaching methods will be used and there will be substantial written assignments. The course will be delivered by staff from the Department of Community Medicine together with visiting teachers from overseas at the CMHS campus at UAEU. This is a beautiful setting that is very conducive to learning and has excellent teaching facilities including the National Medical Library and computer laboratories. While extensive use will be made of on-line and web-based resources this is not a distance learning course. Students will benefit from face to face contact with experienced public health teachers from around the world.

The program will provide a broad academic training in public health, occupational health, epidemiology and biostatistics. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to understand and appraise clinical and health services research and to plan and evaluate health services or other interventions to improve health.
